Magna defend their title in Plovdiv

9 July 2017 /

The last league game of the 2016/17 season in the Plovdiv Football Corporate League turned out to be decisive for the title as it featured the top two teams separated by only a point in the standings.

Emotions in the hot Sunday morning of 9th July were guaranteed as SBTech Global entered the crucial match at the Avantgarde Sports Centre with a 1-point lead over rivals Magna.

Knowing that they have to win, Magna started more actively and opened the scoring on 15 minutes thanks to Hristo Borisov who beat SBTech goalkeeper Tsvetan Gardev with a long-range effort. The conceded goal motivated SBTech to go forward but they did not manage to hit the equalizer despite creating several chances in the remaining 10 minutes of the first half.

After the break, Magna dealt another blow to the title hopes of their rivals as Yosif Sablev converted a brilliant assist from Ivo Torozov into a goal on 32 minutes. SBTech responded immediately with a goal from Stanimir Zhelankov following a perfect corner kick taken by Viktor Kavardzhiev a minute later.

The remainder of the game saw tensions between the players of both teams and all out attack from SBTech. Magna, however, managed to withstand the pressure with the help of their impressive goalkeeper Lyubomir Linkin who showed his class when it mattered the most. By protecting their 2-1 lead till the final whistle Magna won their second straight title with 67 points in 27 games.

SBTech dropped to second place in the final standings with 65 points and Happy Plovdiv finished third with 61.

At the award ceremony after the game, Football Corporate League also awarded the top goal scorer and best goalkeeper of the season. These awards were won by Casino Ritz teammates Tasho Georgiev and Georgi Kostanev, respectively.
