Sportips emerge victorious from EFBLU European Cup 4

28 August 2022 /

Sportips made history by becoming the first Romanian team to win an EFBLU tournament!

EFBLU European Cup 4 was organized by our Polish member league Beskidzka Liga Biznesu in Bielsko-Biała on 27th-28th August and featured teams from 3 European countries - Poland, Romania and Slovenia.

The teams of Sportips and Rekord SI from the host city faced each other in the opening match of the tournament and produced an entertaining 4-4 draw. Interestingly, the destiny wanted these two teams to meet again in the final and achieve the same 4-4 score in regular time.

This final will be long remembered for its great emotions and dramatic outcome. Rekord SI won the first half by 3-0, made the score 4-0 after the break and it looked like that the fate of the title is decided. Sportips, however, did not give up and managed to level the score thanks to the 4 goals of their influential leader Ionuț-Marius Rizea who was later voted MVP of the tournament. Then the Romanian players were more precise in the penalty shoot-out and won it by 3-2 to lift the dream trophy.

The bronze medals were won by the other Romanian team PepsiCo who defeated Polish rivals Netology by 9-4 in the match for the third place. Pepsico led by the prolific forward Dumitru-Constantin Ion was the highest scoring team at the tournament. Netology, on the other side, impressed with their fair play in all the games and were serious contenders for the special Fair Play Award which finally went to the team of Odelo from Slovenia.

The sympathetic Slovenian team won the game for the 7th place against RE/MAX Home Professional from Poland by 9-7 while Davis Fabrics finished 5th after defeating Tyskie Browary Książęce by 7-5 in an all-Polish encounter.

TI Fluid did not manage to qualify for the quarter-finals and remained in 9th place but still had a reason to celebrate as they won the bowling tournament at our integrational party on Saturday.

EFBLU used the so-called "Swiss Model" for the first time in its tournaments. All 10 participating teams played 3 games and were ranked in one league table. The top 8 qualified for the quarter-finals.

"I would like to thank the local organizers from Beskidzka Liga Biznesu for their great efforts in delivering such a magnificent tournament. I also congratulate the new champions Sportips and all participating teams on the nice football they have played. I hope to see you again at our next tournament in Antalya on 3rd-5th November," EFBLU President Dr Pawel Dimow said.
