The economists from Ljubljana win EFBLU European Cup 1

12 November 2017 /

Ekonomska Fakulteta Univerze v Ljubljani ŠD (Faculty of Economics of University of Ljubljana) won the EFBLU European Cup 1 - the first European Championship for corporate teams of our organization!

The popular economists emerged victorious from the tournament which also featured the teams of Portugal Telecom (Lisbon, Portugal), MAGNA Powertrain Plovdiv (Plovdiv, Bulgaria), STRONG (Riga, Latvia), Marco Vet (Bucharest Romania), RMF MAXXX (Kraków, Poland), PKO Bank Polski (Warsaw, Poland) and Magna Formpol (Tychy, Poland).

The reigning champions of Slovenian Poslovna nogometna liga started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Latvian rivals STRONG thanks to a goal from defender Aleš Zajc. They continued with a 2-0 victory against Portugal Telecom with goals from midfielder Tilen Barbarič and forward Luka Jurišič before winning the last group match vs. Magna Formpol by 2-1 thanks to goals from Jurišič and captain Tomaž Čater.

By winning all group matches, Ekonomska Fakulteta qualified for the semi-finals from the first place of group A and faced the team of the Romanian veterinary hospital Marco Vet for the right to play in the final. In this game, Zajc scored his second goal in the tournament and midfielder Savo Bojič added another one to give their team an invaluable 2-0 win.

In the EFBLU European Cup 1 final, the economists had to meet again with their rivals from the group stage - Magna Formpol. This time the game was more equal and when Jurišič broke the 0-0 stalemate late in the game with his third goal of the tournament, it looked like that the Slovenians are very close to lift the trophy. Magna Formpol, however, did not give up and manage to send the game to penalties thanks to Damian Czupryna who levelled the score seconds before the final whistle.

The penalty takers from both teams showed coolness and skills in the shoot-out as they made the first eight attempts from the spot before Magna Formpol's Tomasz Kałuża finally missed. His shot was saved by goalkeeper Ažbe Platiša who gave his team an opportunity to win the final if they score the next penalty. Powerfull striker Rok Petrič took the responsibility and his shot found the net to give the trophy to Ekonomska Fakulteta and crown them EFBLU European Cup 1 champions!

Apart from the main Cup, the economists also won 2 prestigious individual awards as Platiša, who kept 3 clean sheets and conceded only 2 goals in 5 games, was voted the Best Goalkeeper and Jurišič, who scored 3 goals, was selected as the Best Player of the tournament!

Congratulations to the winners and all participants!
