Catena race to win Cupa Companiilor 2021

Catena Racing Team hit great form after the coronavirus break to win the prestigious Cupa Companiilor 2021 for a second time in their history.

The 9th edition of the popular tournament, organized by Liga Companiilor in the Romanian capital of Bucharest, took place from 27th February to 6th March and featured 9 teams. Catena Racing Team, who previously won the competition in 2019, finished ahead of Rompetrol and Lindab, who grabbed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.





The participating teams were drawn into 3 groups with 3 teams and each team played its group rivals twice. The three group winners qualified for the big final. All games were played outdoor on the artificial turf pitches of Spectrum București.

Catena Racing Team qualified from Group C with a perfect record of 4 wins against Lex-LAZIO and FAIR Play. Rompetrol also did not drop any points against AESAv and PepsiCo to win Group B with 12 points. Group A was the most competitive as all three teams were separated by 3 points only. Lindab topped the group standings with 7 points, finishing 1 point ahead of RCS & RDS and 3 points ahead of Ericsson.

The big final featured the teams of Catena Racing Team, Rompetrol and Lindab who formed one group and played each other twice. Catena Racing Team emerged victorious with 9 points after beating Lindab 1-0 and 3-1 and exchanging 1-0 wins with Rompetrol. Rompetrol drew 0-0 and defeated Lindab by 3-0 to finish second in the standings. Lindab managed to collect a single point only and that left them with the bronze medals.

Interestingly, with their second Cupa Companiilor title, Catena Racing Team has collected 5 trophies in the Liga Companiilor's competitions since 2019. The team also won Superliga Companiilor 2019, Cupa Constructorilor 2019 and Campionatul Companiilor – 2.Liga 2018/19.

Following the coronavirus break, Liga Companiilor returned to action also with LIGA-Pro on 10th February and 1.Liga on 3rd March.
